Our History

Hospitality New Zealand was formed in 1902 as the United Licensed Victuallers Association.

In 1958 it was renamed as the Hotel Association of New Zealand, in 1995 it became the Hospitality Association of New Zealand and in 2011 it became Hospitality New Zealand


Hospitality New Zealand has a long heritage of advocacy and service to the hospitality industry. Historically our typical members were owners of pubs, taverns and hotels and our main advocacy focus were liquor issues. We’ve come a long way from 1902 and while Hospitality New Zealand has a rich heritage in this industry we are committed to meet and deliver on the needs of our members today!

Hospitality New Zealand, in conjunction with the Wellington Museums Trust and Pub Charity, published the history of 100 years of Hospitality in New Zealand. The book records not only the progress the organisation has made over the past 100 years but also the development and interaction between society and legislation on matters governing liquor and hospitality in society.
