Bridgit Parker

Bridgit Parker - Central Otago Accommodation Sector Group Chairperson

On a personal note Bridgit is a farm girl at heart – originally from North Otago. Then she moved to Christchurch for tertiary study & work & then travelled overseas for 4 years and returning to live in Dunedin. She has 2 children Sarah (27) and Richard (26) whom are both in the UK at present.

Bridgit started her career as a teacher, went back to University & studied Marketing & Commerce and was Small Business consulting in Dunedin & Wanaka regions until she & her husband-Paul bought the Archway Motels in Wanaka over 10 years ago. It was a significant lifestyle change but she held the view that it is both a pleasure & a privilege to live & work in with such a vibrant & generous supportive community.

Despite huge growth in Wanaka as a destination it is still quite seasonal and the biggest challenge is destination management-balancing the environment, infrastructure, community & tourism growth and retain the unique quality of the visitor experience. Bridgit likes to be active & involved in all aspects of life but especially in the marketing, tourism & accommodation sectors. She has been very active in the 10+ years of owning motels in Wanaka firstly as MANZ branch president for 7 years and also in the Chamber of Commerce and more latterly as a Board member of Lake Wanaka Tourism. Her other significant community & Industry involvement is in Emergency Management Planning and as Assistant manager of a Welfare Centre in the case of a civil defence emergency-she highlights the importance of planning for a disaster which involves getting the community businesses, residents & visitors aware & prepared.

As the Central Otago Accommodation sector chair she is enjoying working in with the regional Executive committee of HNZ. With the bedding-in process complete Bridgit is now positively focused & looking forward to bringing together members, engage with them and to also identify what the specific issues or concerns are for them in their specific & unique accommodation businesses and to help make sure that they feel that Hospitality NZ can deliver value in terms of meaningful engagement, support , relevant information, special member benefits, legal advice, training & advocacy.
